A Rainy Escape to the Maldives

When we landed in the Maldives some time ago, I couldn’t help but wonder if I might’ve been a rain goddess in a past life. 🌧️ It rained almost every day, especially at night.

Apparently, May is not exactly the “postcard-perfect” month to visit. After a long flight and a quick layover, we boarded a tiny seaplane that flew us through thick tropical clouds and heavy rain. It was equal parts terrifying and fascinating — like an amusement park ride with ocean views.

Still, even with all that rain, the Maldives were breathtaking. When the sun finally decided to show up, everything turned into paradise — calm lagoons, powdery white sand, and water so blue it didn’t look real. We spent those rare sunny hours snorkeling among colorful fish and coral reefs, and the rest of the time reading on the beach and pretending we didn’t mind the weather.

The Maldives are made up of over a thousand islands in the Indian Ocean, home to about half a million people who speak Dhivehi (though everyone in tourism speaks great English).

Scientists warn that many of these islands might disappear within this century due to rising sea levels — which somehow makes them feel even more special. Rain or shine, it was peaceful, beautiful, and absolutely worth it. And yes — I’d go back in a heartbeat (preferably with less rain next time).
